Imitate&Ideate
Lessons from Nature
FIT, MA Exhibition & Experience Design, Thesis, December 2018
The main goal of the thesis was to create an exhibition that would inspire, activate, and empower Millennial visitors to unburdened ideation, creative thinking, and the generation of unique solutions for a better life. This vision was carried by the subject of clever natural adaptations and human inventions inspired by the natural world, which encouraged visitors to dream up new ways of dealing with difficult situations and simultaneously to appreciate the wonders of the natural world.
Following & Breaking the Grid
The inspiration for the 2D graphics (campaign, advertising, exhibition text, collateral) and 3D structures stemmed from the idea of following and breaking the grid that translates the main goal of the exhibition — encouraging visitors to generate unique ideas.
Concept Application
The idea of following and breaking the grid translated into the wayfinding and structures of the exhibition, which was located in the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Color-coded stripes of wayfinding on the walls and floor guided visitors from the entrance of the museum to the second floor and up to the 3D structures that housed the content of the exhibition.
See, Do, Learn, Experience Units
Research has shown that adults are more likely to come up with innovative ideas when exposed to precedents first. In other words, they need to know the rules before they are willing to break them. The exhibition purposefully shows wonderful examples from the natural world to open up people to their own unexpected creativity.
